5. Salt of the Earth (2014)
This documentary explores the life and work of Brazilian photographer Sebastião Salgado . The film does not only focus on Brazil (Salgado, during his 40-year professional career, has photographed the entire planet), but the country does have a special importance. Among the images of Brazil that we can see there, some of Salgado's best-known photographs stand out, such as those from the report he made on the gold mines of Serra Pelada . We will also get to know one of the photographer's most recent projects, Genesis , a tribute to the planet and the wild nature that still resists it. Currently, Salgado heads an initiative to recover and conserve the Amazon and has focused his latest photographic works there. You can see a sample at Voces de la Amazonia .
We continue in Brazil with this classic of Latin American cinema directed by Walter Salles. In Central do Brasil we meet Dora (played masterfully by Fernanda Montenegro), a retired teacher who dedicates herself to writing the letters Email Address List dictated to her by illiterates in Rio de Janeiro 's central station . Dora is a cold and aloof woman, but one day everything changes: one of her clients is hit and killed and her little son is left alone at the station. Conflicted with her initial selfishness and detachment, Dora decides to embark on a journey across Brazil with the boy to reunite him with his father, who lives in a distant province.
